ODI Cricket Format
ODI (One Day International) is a format of cricket in which each team plays a limited number of overs, currently set at 50 overs per innings. An ODI match is typically played over the course of a single day, hence the name ‘One Day International.’
In an ODI match, two teams play against each other, with each team getting to bat and bowl for 50 overs. The team that scores the most runs at the end of the 50 overs wins the match. If the scores are tied, the match is declared a tie, but if there is still a tie after a tiebreaker, the match may be decided through a super over.
Each bowler is limited to bowling a maximum of 10 overs per inning, which means that a team can have a maximum of 5 bowlers in an inning. There are also several fielding restrictions in place, which means that only a certain number of fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle for a certain period of the innings. This is designed to encourage aggressive and attacking cricket and to keep the game moving quickly.
ODI cricket is played at the international level, and there are rankings for teams and players in this format. The ICC (International Cricket Council) organizes the ODI Cricket World Cup, which is held every four years and is one of the most prestigious tournaments in cricket.
Upcoming Tournament 2023
The ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 is scheduled to be held in India from 9th February to 26th March 2023. The tournament will feature 10 teams, with each team playing against the other nine teams in a round-robin format. The top 4 groups will then qualify for the semi-finals, accompanied by the final.
The 10 teams that will participate in the tournament are India, England, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
The tournament will be played across 13 venues in India, with the final to be held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This will be the first time that India will host the ODI World Cup on its own, having previously co-hosted the tournament in 1987, 1996, and 2011.
